Privacy Policy

What personal information Viwaham.com collects, how we use and protect it, what other members can see, and the choices you have. Written to be read, not skimmed past.

Last updated 1 October 2026 Effective 1 September 2025 Colombo, Sri Lanka

Your profile is public

Age, community, religion and education are visible to visitors and search engines. Photos are shown only to the people you choose.

Your contacts are not

Phone and email are shared only with a family whose interest you accept, and are never sold.

Ads use cookies

Google and other vendors serve ads based on your visits. You can opt out — see section 6.

You stay in control

Edit, hide or delete your profile at any time, and ask for a copy of your data.

This policy explains what Viwaham.com does with your personal information. It applies to this website and to any service we provide through it. We are a matrimonial service based in Colombo, Sri Lanka, operating at viwaham.com.

By registering with us or using the site, you agree to the handling of information described here. If you do not agree, please do not register. Our Terms of Use should be read alongside this policy.

1Information we collect

We collect three broad categories of information.

a. Information you give us

CategoryExamples
Profile information Name or profile name, gender, date of birth, height, marital status, mother tongue, religion, community, caste, education, occupation, income range, food habits, country and city of residence, horoscope details such as nakshatra and rasi, photographs, partner preferences, and any description you write.
Contact and account information Mobile number, email address, postal address where provided, password or one-time passcode records, and the identity of the family member managing the profile where that applies.
Communications Messages you send through the contact form, expressions of interest, and correspondence with our support team.
Payment information Where you purchase a paid membership, the transaction record and billing details. Card and online payments are processed by our payment provider, PayHere (PayHere (Private) Limited, Sri Lanka). Your card number is entered on PayHere's secure page and is never seen or stored by Viwaham; we receive only the payment result, amount and a reference number.

b. Information collected automatically

When you visit the site we and our service providers automatically record technical data: IP address, browser type and version, device type and operating system, referring page, the pages you view and the time spent on them, and the approximate location derived from your IP address. This is standard server and analytics data.

c. Information from others

Profiles are frequently created by a parent, sibling or other relative on behalf of the person seeking marriage. If you create a profile for someone else, you confirm you have their consent to provide their information. If you believe a profile about you was created without your consent, contact us and we will remove it after verifying your identity.

2How we use your information

  • To create, display and maintain your matrimonial profile.
  • To suggest profiles that match your stated partner preferences, and to include your profile in searches run by other members.
  • To authenticate you, including by sending one-time passcodes to your mobile number.
  • To send match alerts, service notices and responses to your enquiries.
  • To process payments for paid memberships and keep transaction records.
  • To verify profiles, detect fraudulent or duplicate accounts, and enforce our Terms of Use.
  • To understand how the site is used so we can improve it.
  • To display advertising, as described in section 6.
  • To comply with legal obligations and respond to lawful requests.

3What other members can see

This distinction matters, so it is stated plainly.

Publicly visible: the information in your profile — profile ID, gender, age, height, religion, community, education, occupation, location, horoscope details and your description — is visible to visitors of the site, including people who are not registered. Search engines may index profile pages. Do not put anything in your profile that you would not want seen publicly.

Never displayed publicly: your mobile number, email address, postal address, password, payment details and the identity of the account holder. We do not sell or publish member contact details, and we do not pass them to other members without your involvement.

Photographs. You choose who sees your photos: only families whose interest you accept (the default), any registered member, or everyone. You can change this at any time from About me & photo privacy on your dashboard.

Interests and contact details. When you send an interest we record which of your profiles sent it, to which profile, when, and any short note you add, and we tell the other family by SMS or email. If a family accepts your interest, or you accept theirs, the two of you can see each other's mobile number, WhatsApp number and email address. That is the only way another member sees them. Declined and withdrawn interests are kept so the same family is not approached twice. Where contact details are a paid feature, we also record which contacts you have unlocked and how many credits your account holds.

Shortlist. Profiles you save to your shortlist are visible only to you.

Never put contact details in a free-text field. Phone numbers or email addresses typed into a description box become publicly visible. We remove them when we find them, but please do not add them.

4When we share information

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only in these situations:

  • Service providers who operate the service on our behalf — hosting, SMS delivery, email delivery, payment processing and analytics. They may use the data only to perform that service for us.
  • Advertising partners, as described in section 6.
  • Legal requirements — where we are required by law, court order or a lawful request from a public authority, or where disclosure is necessary to investigate fraud, protect the safety of a member, or enforce our Terms.
  • Business transfer — if the service is transferred to another operator, member information would transfer with it, subject to this policy.

5Cookies and similar technologies

A cookie is a small text file stored by your browser. We use them for:

  • Essential functions — keeping you signed in, maintaining your session, and security. The site does not work without these.
  • Preferences — remembering filters and settings you have chosen.
  • Measurement — understanding which pages are viewed, including a cookie that records that you have already viewed a given profile so views are not double-counted.
  • Advertising — see the next section.

Most browsers let you block or delete cookies through their settings. If you block essential cookies, you will not be able to sign in.

6Advertising, Google AdSense and third-party vendors

This site is supported in part by advertising, and we want to be specific about what that means.

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites.
  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
  • You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings.
  • You can opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info/choices or optout.networkadvertising.org.
  • Third-party vendors and ad networks that we have not directly authorised may also serve ads through Google's network. Where they do, they may also place cookies on your device. We do not control those cookies.
  • Google's own handling of data in its advertising products is described in the Google Privacy & Terms site.

Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. Where required, we ask for your consent before any non-essential cookie — including advertising cookies — is set, and you may withdraw that consent at any time through your browser settings or by contacting us. Personalised advertising is not shown without consent.

We do not permit advertising that targets members on the basis of sensitive characteristics derived from their profile, and we do not pass profile data to advertisers.

7How long we keep information

  • Active profiles — for as long as your account remains active.
  • Deleted or closed profiles — removed from public view immediately; residual copies are purged from our systems within 90 days, except where we must retain records for the reasons below.
  • Transaction records — retained for as long as required by applicable accounting and tax law.
  • Records relating to fraud, abuse or a legal dispute — retained for as long as necessary to address the matter.
  • Server and analytics logs — typically retained for up to 12 months.

8Your rights and choices

You may, at any time:

  • Access and correct your information by signing in and editing your profile.
  • Hide or delete your profile. Contact us and we will remove it. Where the profile was created by a relative, we will verify identity before acting.
  • Stop match alerts and other optional messages by writing to us or messaging us on WhatsApp. Service messages relating to your account, such as sign-in codes and payment receipts, will continue.
  • Request a copy of the information we hold about you.
  • Object to or restrict certain processing, and withdraw consent where processing relies on it.

Depending on where you live, you may have specific statutory rights — for example under the Sri Lanka Personal Data Protection Act, the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation, or California privacy law. We honour these requests regardless of where you are. Write to support@viwaham.com and we will respond within 30 days. We do not sell personal information as that term is used in California law.

9Security

Traffic to and from the site is encrypted in transit using TLS. Passwords are stored hashed, not in plain text. Access to member data by our staff is limited to those who need it for support and verification. Card details are entered on PayHere's secure payment page and processed on PCI DSS Level 1 certified bank systems; they are never stored by us.

No system is perfectly secure. If we become aware of a breach affecting your personal data, we will notify you and the relevant authority as required by law.

10Children

This service is for adults seeking marriage. The minimum age for registration is 18, consistent with the minimum legal age of marriage in Sri Lanka. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we learn that a profile belongs to a minor, we remove it. If you believe a minor has registered, tell us at support@viwaham.com.

11International transfers

We serve members in Sri Lanka and in the Tamil diaspora, including Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, France, Switzerland, Germany, India and the Gulf states. Your information may be stored or processed on servers outside your country of residence. Where we transfer data internationally, we take steps to ensure it remains protected to the standard described in this policy.

12Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. The date at the top shows when it was last revised. Where a change materially affects how we use your information, we will notify registered members by email or by a notice on the site before it takes effect.
